ALL BURMA STUDENTS' DEMOCRATIC ORGANISATION

Joint statement of ABSDO and ABSL for Ye Thi Ha (a) Mr San Naing , which
is sending to the Australian Government

Hon Alexander Downer MHR
Minister for Foreign Affairs
Parliment House
CANBERRA,ACT 2600

DATE:June 23,1997

Dear Minister,
We are the exile pro-democracy students from Burma where the so-call
State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), one of the worst
dictatorship regiems of the present days of world's society, has rule
its own people at gunpoint since its 1988 massacring bloodshed coup.
Today , Burma is a state of terror.

We would like to mention about our comrade Mr.San Naing (a) Ye thi Ha
who is a Burmese student, was involved in the democracy movement in
Burma 1988 and Thai- Burma border. He was involved in the hijack of a
Burma Airways aircraft from Mergui in Burma to U-tapao air base in
Thailand on 6 October 1989 in order to focus world attention on the
pro-democracy movement in Burma and the plight of the people of Burma.
He and his associate peacefully released the passengers as soon as the
aircraft had landed at U-tapaoo air base and gave up themselves to the
Thai police. Mr.San Naing served apricon sentence in Thailand for that
offence.

Mr . San Naing was released from prison in thailand in August 1992 but
was re-arrested in Novernber ,1993 when it was alleged he was in
possession of illegal explosives which he planned to use in Burma
against the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) in Burma.

Mr.San Naing was sentenced to 5 years and 4 months in prison by Thai
authorities in early 1994 in respect of above mention offence.

We would like you to know his condition under the Thai government which
has deported some Burmese students who are involved in the anti-Burmese
regime activities in Thailand since 1992.

On May 23, 1997 Lieutenant Colonel Soe Lwin (Burmese Army) came to see
him at prison by the permission of Thai Authorties and showed the video
tape which is San Naing's mother in Burma and force him to agree to
return to Burma. Mr. San Naing refused to return and who is worrying to
deport to Burma by Thai government without his agreement. Thai
government has never allowed visiting any prisoner except special visit
period.

He has involved at the anti-Burmese military government movement in
Burma, since 1988. He was involved at the hijacking in 1989 from Burma
to Thailand. He wouldn't be able to return to Burma because of his
activities.

And he has already applied to the UNHCR in Thailand to get person of
concern of under the UNHCR. Now, we have a worrying for Mr. San Naing
who had served to finish his confinement in Thai prison for 5 years and
4 months.

We would like to respectfully request you and your government to
consider sympathetically for Mr. san Naing situation under the Thai
government in Thailand. Don't deport him to Burma.

Yours sincerely,

Soe Lwin(a) Ye Thu Naing Ye Myint Htun
Central Executive Committee Chairman
