4 ASSOCIATES OF SUU KYI DETAINED IN BURMA
===========================================================
Bangkok, June 20: Burmese authorities were tight-lipped on
Friday about the reported detention of four close
associated of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi,
including two of her cousins.
A senior government official in Rangoon declined to comment
on the report. "Public discussion of sensitive issues is
not appropriate and it will be premature to reveal details
at this stage," the official said. A source in Ms Suu Kyi's
party in Thursday said the four were picked up by
authorities over the weekend.
There was speculation they were wanted for questioning
about documents and other materials which Ms Suu Kyi
managed to have sent out of the country. It was not clear
where they were being held. The four included Mr Cho Aung
Than, who until recently was one of the Opposition leader's
close aides at her Rangoon home.
Since her release from house arrest in July 1995, Ms Suu
Kyi has been able to send letters and taped addresses to
lobby the international community in behalf of her National
League for Democracy. Over the past year the Burmese junta
has progressively moved to isolate the NLD leader, by
cutting her telephone line and preventing her from
meeting journalists. (AFP)
