Electricity from Burma

Thailand will sign a memorandum on Friday to buy 1,500 mW of electricity
from Burma by 2010, according to Electricity Generating Authority of
Thailand (Egat) Governor Preecha Chungwattana.

Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh will preside over the signing,
which will be attended by Prime Minister's Office Minister Sompong
Amornvivat and Burmese Energy Minister U Khin Maung Thein.

Mr Preecha said the memorandum would contain a bilateral agreement to
plan the construction of a transmission system for both countries, along
with the Burmese Government's permission for Thai businessmen to
participate in power generating projects.

Mr Preecha said a joint working committee would work out details of the
deal. Egat also planned to buy electricity from Laos and China.
