Asean to meet on Cambodia's entry
T
HE Association of South-east Asian Nations is to hold an emergency
meeting on Saturday to decide whether to "reverse" Cambodia's scheduled
entry, Philippine Foreign Secretary Domingo Siazon said yesterday.
Mr Siazon said the meeting would bring together Asean senior officials
"and there is a request for an emergency meeting of foreign ministers".
He said the meeting, to be chaired by Malaysia, is "to determine whether
the situation at that time, Saturday, in Cambodia would require a
reversal of the previous position" to admit Cambodia into Asean.
Indonesia's Foreign Minister Ali Alatas had earlier in the day called
for an emergency meeting of Asean to discuss Cambodia.
Cambodia, with Laos and Myanmar, is due to join the seven-nation Asean
at the annual ministerial meeting in Kuala Lumpur this month.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's Acting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said yesterday
that Cambodia will join Asean as planned.
He said "we will negotiate with both the PMs" when asked who Asean would
negotiate with in Cambodia. "Our concern is peaceful resolution of the
conflict," said Mr Anwar. -- Reuter, AFP

STRENGTH, WE CAN'T TOPPLE THE SLORC AND BURMA WILL NEVER BE IN PEACE."
