The military will protest against Burmese acts of brutality against
seven Thai people in which one woman suffered injuries so severe that
she has become disabled.

The seven Muser hilltribe people of Ban Ya Pa Nae in Pang Ma Pha
district were arrested by Burmese troops in March for illegal entry.

They were detained in Keng Tung in Shan State where the condition of the
prison was very poor. The cell was describd as tiny and prisoners were
only given "meagre meals" twice a day.

One of them, Chantha Jaha, 19, was beaten on the legs so forcefully that
she cannot walk.

The seven were returned to Thailand last Friday after intervention by
the Thai authorities.

Their complaints about the hardship in the prison prompted Surasith
Trithong, a provincial councillor, to demand yesterday that Thailand
send a protest note to Burma.

Prachote Thianchetthakul, head of the Thai-Burmese Coordinating Group of
Mae Hong Son, said he will soon send a protest letter to the Burmese
military unit in Keng Tung.

Thai people have been warned to stay away from the border areas.

"THERE WILL BE NO REAL DEMOCRACY IF WE CAN'T GURANTEE THE RIGHTS OF THE
MINORITY ETHNIC PEOPLE. ONLY UNDERSTANDING THEIR SUFFERING AND HELPING
THEM TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS WILL ASSIST PREVENTING FROM THE
DISINTEGRATION AND THE SESESSION." "WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THEIR
STRENGTH, WE CAN'T TOPPLE THE SLORC AND BURMA WILL NEVER BE IN PEACE."
