40 Tamils shot in skirmish
Troops shot dead at least 40 Tamil guerillas in a confrontation during a
continuing military advance to open a road in the north, the Defence
Ministry said yesterday. The Tigers meanwhile killed a senior
intelligence officer in the northern town of Vavuniya.
Red Cross officials in the town said Tigers handed over the body of a
North Korean seaman killed during the hijacking of a merchant vessel.
They said his 37 fellow crewmen would be released soon.
