California city targets companies in Burma

SAN FRANCISCO, July 9 (Reuter) - California's seaside community of Santa
Cruz said on Wednesday it would penalize companies that do business in
Burma, joining a list of governments to lash out at the military-ruled
state.

The Santa Cruz resolution would prohibit city investment in American
companies that do business in Burma and make it harder for those
companies to win city contracts.

The resolution was unanimously approved by the city council at a
late-night meeting on Tuesday.

President Bill Clinton in mid-May officially imposed economic sanctions
on Burma. The United States and other Western countries accuse Rangoon
of human rights abuses and repression of the democracy movement.

A Massachusetts law imposes a pricing penalty on state procurements from
companies that do business in Burma.

Earlier this year, New York City's mayor signed a law barring the city
from dealing with companies that do business in Burma.

"THERE WILL BE NO REAL DEMOCRACY IF WE CAN'T GURANTEE THE RIGHTS OF THE
MINORITY ETHNIC PEOPLE. ONLY UNDERSTANDING THEIR SUFFERING AND HELPING
THEM TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS WILL ASSIST PREVENTING FROM THE
DISINTEGRATION AND THE SESESSION." "WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THEIR
STRENGTH, WE CAN'T TOPPLE THE SLORC AND BURMA WILL NEVER BE IN PEACE."
