BURMA AND CHINA AGREE TO STEP UP FIGHT AGAINST DRUGS
****************************************************
Monday 14 July, 1997 (11:26pm AEST)
Burma and China have agreed to step up cooperation in the
fight against the production and supply of illegal drugs.
The accord came during talks in Rangoon between senior
anti-drugs officials from both countries.
Burma and China are signatories to a regional plan on
narcotics control, together with Cambodia, Laos, Thailand
and Vietnam.
Western officials say Burma is the source of most of the
world's heroin, which flows to international markets through
its borders with China, Laos and Thailand.
