NOTABLE QUOTES
************************

1.	?-----Burma may be inside ASEAN, but it will remain outside the South East
Asia?s main stream. By admitting Burma as a member, Asean assumes a greater
responsibility. Burma?s problem now becomes ASEAN?s problem? U.S Secretary of
State Madeleine Albright

2.	?------Eight of the most powerful nations have decided that they, and they
alone, should determine the fate of every country.? Malaysian Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad.

3.	? Western Nations are imposing not Democracy and Human Rights but
Hypocrisy and Might is Right over us.? H. Min - Office of Strategic Studies,
Myanmar

4.	?------It?s always going to be a struggle between ends and means, but the
burden of proof is now much greater. But when you are a country in the custom
of trying to influence other countries? politics -even if for noble motives-
it?s a habit that is very hard to break.? Michael R. Beschloss (Historian)
Author of U.S Policy in the Cold War.

5.	?------No one, but no one, should assume that only they know the solutions
to all problems. They have failed far too often for us to be convinced that
only they know what is right and what is wrong.? Malaysian Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad.

6.	?------However, we strongly believe that it is highly inappropriate for
the E.U and Japan to involve themselves in the internal affairs of
Massachusetts. It is not the place of the European Union and Japan to dictate
how the Massachusetts legislature and state government should spend its own
taxpayers? money.

Aung San Su Kyi remarked in a recent interview that selected purchasing laws
are very effective means of restoring Democracy in Burma. She also specially
praised the Massachusetts Burma Law. ? Letter to USTR on Massachusetts Burma
Law, collectively signed by Rep. B. Frank; Rep. E. Markey; Rep-J.Kennedy;
Rep. M. Mechan; Rep. J. Tiemey; Rep. R.Neal; Rep. J.Moakley; Rep. J.Olver;
Rep. J. Mc Govern.

7. ?------The threat faced by nations is economic sanctions to
impoverish the people and to stir internal strife. ?Malaysian Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad.

8. ?------ We should not develop independent attitudes, because this
can bring about chaos. Whatever contribution we want to make, we will make in
this region through ASEAN, and we will consider everything very, very
careful.? President of South Africa Mr.N .Mandela

9. ?------- State and Municipal governments are setting their own
foreign policy.
For instance, the state of Massachusetts refused to award contract to any
company (national or international) doing business with Myanmar and is now
considering including Indonesia. All this is exacerbated by the U.S
government?s attempts to extend internationally the territorial reach of its
domestic laws, as in the Helms-Burton Act which, in certain circumstances,
punish foreign companies and executives for doing business with Cuba---What
could be more ludicrous! Author of ?Asia Pacific; Its Role in the New World
Disorder? revised edition. Mr. Michael Dobbs-Higginson.

10. ?------- Daw Su Kyi?s anti-tourism and anti-investment stance has
become very unpopular among the majority of the population. This policy of
hers is like putting a curse on her own country and people. She is actually
breaking the rice bowls of the Myanmar people from all walks of life. There
are opposition parties in almost every country and non of these parties would
use such tactics to play politics. It is understood that whether it is
opposition or the party is power, their main objective is to create better
living standard for the people of their own country and not to make them
suffer and starve.? Statement given at 3rd Dec.?96 Press Briefing in Yangon
by H.Min - Office of Strategic Studies (Myanmar)
