(1)	Paper-Reading Session on Forest Research 

	A new Tawwin Hall of Forest Department (Head Office) was opened at
 its office on 26 August and Minister for Forestry unveiled the inscription
of the hall. Later on a paper-reading session on forest research was held
at  the hall . In his address, Minister Lt-Gen Chit Swe said the Government
is making efforts for narrowing the development gap among regions and
research work is to be applied in practical fields based on policy laid
down for progress of forest technology as forest sector plays an important
part in all-round development of the country. He also spoke of the need to
give priority to activities which suport economy without harming natural
environment in forest management. The Minister also spoke of research on
greening of dry zone and cooperation with local residents and extension of
research, application of  lesser known species, importance of other forest
products, production of firewood and charcoal-substitute fuel and research
on production of stoves that uses less firewood and charcoal and
State-level cooperation. Over 240 participants including heads of 
departments under the ministry, researchers, members of Research
Supervisory Committee on forest, professors, guests of international
organizations, personnel of NGOs and retires persons from Forest Department
attended the paper-reading session. The session continues till 28 August
and twelve papers will be presented at the session.

(2)	Ph. D Courses on Applied Science Open

	A ceremony to open Ph. D courses on applied science was held at
Yangon Institute of Technology this afternoon, with an address by Minister
for Science and Technology U Thaung. Minister said it is a milestone for
YIT to  conduct such courses and they are being conducted with the project
of producing outstanding experts who will participate in building of a
modern, developed nation. Altogether 48 trainees 43 from departments under
the ministry and institutes and five from the Ministry of Defence, are
attending the courses on nuclear technology, engineering
physics-electronics, engineering chemistry and engineering mathematics.

(3)	Myanmars Win Gold, Bronze in 12th Asian Body-building Championships

	The Myanmar bodybuilding team won gold and bronze medals in the
12th Asian Junior Bodybuilding Championships. Nineteen nations took part in
the championship held in the Republic of Korea.

(4)	Yangon Gem? 97 Exhibition at Traders Hotel	

	With the support of Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, TTF (Yangon)
Co Ltd will organize Yangon Gem ? 97 Exhibition at Traders Hotel from 10 to
14 September. Jewellers and artifacts will be displayed at the exhibition
which is open to the public.


                      OFFICE  CALLS IN YANGON ON 26 AUGUST

(A)	Minister for Hotels and Tourism Lt-Gen Kyaw Ba received
Director-General Mr. Kentaro Tani of EXE Design Co Ltd of Japan and party
at his office.

(B)	Minister for Forestry Lt-Gen Chit Swe received Member of
Parliament of Japan Mr Yoichi Tani and party at International Business
Centre.

(C)	Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Lt-Gen Myint Aung received
the visiting mission led by Member of the Parliament of Japan Mr Yoichi
Tani at his office.
