(1)		Second Double-decker Built by Myanma Shipyards Launched

		A double-decker, built by Myanma Shipyards under contract with Yunan
Machinery Import and Export Corporation (YMEC) of the People?s Republic of
China, was launched on 16 September. Named ?Thallawady-4?, it is the second
double-decker built by MS under this contract. The first boat ? Thallawady-3?
was launched in March 1997 and two more double-deckers are under construction
at MS. The double-decker was specially designed to travel along shallow
waters of Chindwin River in Sagaing Division. The decker, 37.4 metres long
and 8.5 metres wide, can carry 250 passengers and has ten first class cabins
fully installed with modern facilities. It has a depth of 1.9 metres and a
draught of only one metre. The ship equipped with a 280-horsepower engine has
a cruising speed of ten nautical miles per hour. 

		MS has built 21 boats comprising three passenger boats, nine z-craft and
nine barges for Inland Water Transport since 1988. It has  also renovated
three cargo boats and five barges. It has also built boats of various types
for the private sector, Myanma Timber Enterprise, Customs Department,
Ministry of Cooperatives, Ministry of Mines, Irrigation Department, Myanma
Port Authority and other departments. At present, it is building six 800-ton
barges each with a length of 50 metres and one500-ton coastal cargo boat. 

		MS is building a 50-metre barge designed to carry machinery and a 65-metre
support barge for coastal services for Java Marine Lines Pte Ltd of Singapore
in accord with Lloyd?s Class & American Bureau of Shipping Certificate. It
has already signed contracts to build six ships for foreign companies. MS
since 1988 has built 118 powered boats and barges.

(2)		Hana Bank of Republic of Korea Opens Yangon Representative Office

		Hana Bank of the Republic of Korea opened its Yangon Representative Office
at International Business Centre on 16 September. Hana is the third ROK bank
which has opened representative office in Yangon. At present, 273 foreign
business firms have investments in Myanmar.
 
(3)		Annawa Fisheries Holdings Ltd Opens 500-ton Cold Storage

		A 500-ton capacity cold storage of Annawa Fisheries Holdings Ltd was opened
at the cold storage on Nyaungdan Street in Pazundaung Township on 16
September. Nyaungdan Housing Project being implemented by Department of Human
Settlement and Housing Development and Yuzana Construction Group includes the
cold storage, wharves and ice factory. Nyaungdan wharves No 1 and No 2 were
opened on 28 December 1995 and 18 September 1996 respectively. For increase
of export, the cold storage of international standard has been built. The
storage with three air blast freezers will produce 30 tons of dressed fish a
day worth US $ 75,000. 

		It will also produce six tons of finished prawn, worth US $ 60,000 a day
and it will produce the products worth US $ 135,000 daily on running full
operation. Products are expected to reach US $ 15 million a year. In the long
run, more sea and fresh water fish and prawn will be produced and
arrangements are being made to earn US $ 30 million coming years. The storage
is equipped with a chiller room, a water chiller, a flake ice machine and
generators. A 1000-ton  capacity cold storage and ice factory will be opened
very soon.


(4)		PRC Red Cross Donates $ 20,000 for Flood Relief

		Red Cross Society of the People?s Republic of China donated US $ 20,000 for
flood relief measures of Myanmar on 16 September. The cash donation ceremony
was held at Myanmar Red Cross building. The Chinese ambassador handed the
donation to Honorary Treasurer of MRCS U Tun Myint.

(5)		Opium Seized in Mandalay

		Police seized over 34 kilos of opium in various forms and other illegal
property from houses of three persons in Mandalay on 15 August 1997, also
arresting 18 persons including them in connection with the case.

(6)		Labour Department, Singapore Companies Sign Agreements

		Labour Department of the Ministry of Labour signed agreements for training,
certification and dispatch of Myanmar construction workers to Singapore with
Sin Mar Tech and Big One companies of Singapore at Head Office of LD on 16
September. Sin Mar Tech will train Myanmar construction workers for skills
and Big One will make arrangements to send them to Singapore and other
countries legally. 

		At the signing ceremony, Labour Department Director-General U Tun Yay
explained training and certification programmes for Myanmar workers.

OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 16 SEPTEMBER

(A)		Secretary-1 of the State Law and Order Restoration Council Lt-GenKhin
Nyunt received Minister of Women?s Affairs of Indonesia Madame Mien Sugandhi
and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence.

(B)		Minister for Forestry Lt-Gen Chit Swe received Assistant
Director-General of FAO and Resident Representative for Asia and Pacific
Region of the FAO Dr Soetatwo Hadiwigeno at the International Business Centre
on Pay Road.

(C)		Minister for Hotels and Tourism Lt-Gen Kyaw Ba received Bangkok-based
TTG Asia Magazine Bureau Chief Mr Tom Racette at his office. The Minister
replied to queries raised by Mr Tom Racette on prospects and development of
tourism industry in Myanmar and cooperation programme in the region.

(D)		Minister for Forestry Lt-Gen Chit Swe received Chairman & Managing
Director of Adorna Group of Companies Dato John Fong and party at the
International Business Centre on Pay Road.

(E)		Minister for Hotels and Tourism Lt-Gen Kyaw Ba received  Managing
Director of High Class Liveaboard Co Ltd Mr Wolfgang Garhoefer at his office.

(F)		Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received
Chairman of Hana Bank Mr Byung Chul Yoon and party of the Republic of Korea
at the office of the MIC. Similary, he received Chairman of Young Nam
Rent-a-Car Co Ltd and New Crown Travel Co Ltd Mr Chong Chang Kyo and party.
