Ex-Myanmar leader to visit Indonesia

Jakarta (A)) Former Myanmar dictator Gen. Ne Win is to make a three-day
private visit to Indonesia at the invitation of President Suharto, State
Secretariat Minister Murdiono said Monday.

He is to have a private dinner with Suharto on Tuesday night in Jakarta.

Ne Win, who is rarely seen in public, would visit the grave of Suharto's
wife, Tien, in the central Javanese city of Solo on Wednesday before leaving
for Singapore on thursday, Murdiono said.

Ne Win ruled Myanmar for 26 years before its present military junta, the
State Law and Order Restoration Council, seized power on Sept. 18, 1988 and
crushed pro-democracy demonstrations that saw the emergency of Aung San Suu
Ky8i as leader of the nonviolent resistance.

Ne Win stepped down in July 1988, but many Myanmar people, foreign diplomats
and historians believe he engineered the takeover and handpicked the 21
generals who comprise the ruling council
