SLORC Has Served a Foul Ball
Burma's opposition party, National League for Democracy, voiced
sound and clear 'NO' to SLORC's conditional meeting and has decided to
hold a general meeting instead.
The party again made a clever and democratic judgement since it
fully accounted the public opinion. As we all know, NLD is firmly based
on principles to serve Burmese people but not on any type of emotional
attachment after 1988 killings. Its members are sacrificing under the
military rule that effectively destroyed Burma and its political life.
NLD is a political party. Its duty is paving the way to democracy in
Burma by doing politics. That is to dance with the tunes that people
enjoy.
Being a caller for political dialogue, the NLD will definitely talk
if SLORC come up with a right plan. It is waiting for a service ball that
reaches over the net. For now, it is absurd to assume that NLD is in
awkward position because it did not hit this ball.
The SLORC again needs make greater effort to appeal their sincerity
and trust to the people by generating a plan that can realize a
meaningful discussion. (The reason that the SLORC does not want to talk
with Daw Suu is reportedly that she may first ask them to release all
political prisoners. Most Burmese believe that it is the thing that SLORC
cannot do.)
Remember that almost the entire people of Burma practically supports
the NLD and that 100% support was again and again confirmed by the NLD
leaders just after Daw Suu's release from the house arrest.
The SLORC has started with a foul ball.
