AMNESTY CALLS FOR THREE AILING BURMESE PRISONERS TO BE FREED
************************************************************
Saturday 11 October, 1997 (9:31pm AEST)
Amnesty International has called on Burma's military government
to release three
political prisoners, all aged in their 60s, who were
transferred to a hospital for
medical treatment.
The human-rights group asked that Win Tin, Cho Aung Than and
Aung Khin Sint,
all members of the party led Aung San Suu Kyi, "not be returned
to prison under
any circumstances."
Human rights workers say Burma's prisons are overcrowded, and
unhealthy
conditions, coupled with delayed medical care have led to the
deaths of political
prisoners in custody.
