(1)		Mid-year Myanmar Gems Emporium on 21 October
 
		Minister for Mines previewed the Mid-year Myanmar Gems 
Emporium scheduled to commence on 21 October in the Myanmar Gems Emporium
Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road (Yangon) on 13 October. The Minister and
authorities concerned inspected gem lots, jewellery pieces and jade carvings
on display on the ground floor of the Emporium Hall to be sold at fixed
prices, imperial, commercial and utility jade lots on display in the building
complex and gem lots, jade lots and pearl lots on display on the third floor
of the Emporium Hall.
 
(2)		22nd, 23rd Training Courses on Planning (Grade I) Open
 
		The 22nd and 23rd Training Courses on Planning (Grade I) of the Planning
Department, Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, opened at
the Office of the Prime Minister, on 13 October in Yangon. Minister for NPED
Brig-Gen Abel spoke on the occasion. He said planning is essential for every
nation since national objectives have to be formulated systematically.
Economic development can be achieved through plans, he said, adding
neighbouring countries are doing the same. The minister said a 30-month
economic stabilization plan had been adopted and economic plans drafted every
year since Myanmar started off with market economy in 1988. As a result, he
said, Myanmar economy got better and it has stabilized to some extent.
 
		Then, a four-year short-term economic plan was implemented. The annual
growth rate then stood at 7.5 per cent exceeding the targeted 5.1 per cent,
he said. The economy then secured a favorable ground. At present, he said,
the five-year plan from 1996-97 to 2000-2001 is being implemented. The
courses will be held from 14 to 29 October 1997.

(3)		National Convention Convening Commission Meets
 
		The National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at its meeting
hall on 13 October. Present were Chairman of NCCC Lt-Gen Myo Nyunt,
Vice-Chairman Lt-Gen Maung Thint and Brig-Gen Myo Thant and commission
members. Respective committees reported on matters relating to the National
Convention. The commission members took part in the discussions.
(4)		Course for Township Internal Revenue Officers Opens
 
		Course No 7 for Township Internal Revenue Officers opened on 13 October at
Internal Revenue Department with an address by Minister for Finance and
Revenue. The course is being conducted for Township IRD Officers to be able
to collect taxes in accord with rules and regulations, he said. All-round
changes should be made in Myanmar which is now an ASEAN nation, he said.
Myanmar is working in line with CEPT system in her efforts to enter AFTA,
reducing tax-rates to a significant degree and improving tax management
functions, he noted.
 
(5)		Agriculture Graduates Leaves for Israel
 
		Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation gave counsel to 56 agriculture
graduates who will be attending on-job farming course in Israel at his office
on 13 October. Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has sent agriculture
graduates to attend practical one-year crop course in Israel and it was the
fourth batch.
