ARCO OUT OF BURMA! - Demonstration

Los Angeles - About two dozen burmese exiles and other supporters of
democracy in Burma demonstrated outside ARCO Headquarters in downtown Los
Angeles today. ARCO is currently in a joint venture with Burma's brutal
military dictatorship, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC).
The company has given more than $11 million directly to SLORC.

Protestors focussed primarily on the role of ARCO's investment in
supporting the international heroin trade. The U.S. State Department
reports that over 60% of the heroin seized on U.S. streets originates in
Burma. The SLORC and the state-run Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE)
have been linked to the drug trade and to the laundering of drug money.

Signs and banners at the event had slogans including "Burma is a nARCO
Dictatorship" "nARCO the Real Difference is the Heroin" and a 20 foot
banner reading "ARCO is Burma = Heroin in U.S.A." One of the
demonstrators, wearing a mask of ARCO CEO Mike Bowlin, carried a giant
heroin needle which read "Heroin by ARCO" and "nARCOcotic trade."

Members of the Free Burma Coalition, Los Angeles and the Burma Forum, Los
Angeles plan to continue to escalate pressure on L.A.-based ARCO
corporation until they withdraw from Burma.
