the ARCO Board of Directors) WRITE A STATEMENT OPPOSING ARCO'S CONTINUED
INVESTMENT IN BURMA

Also, write to President Slaugther at jbs@xxxxxxx and urge him to comply
immediately with the students' demand: Write a letter to the Board of
Directors opposing ARCO's continued investment in Burma

This is a very difficult and emotionally draining task they have
undertaken, please send statements as soon as possible.  It is very
important that they know that they have a lot of support.

Today, organizers of the Occidental College Free Burma Student Coalition
organized a rally to meet with the President of the college, John
Slaugther.   Mr. Slaughter is also a member of the ARCO Board of Directors.
Mr. Slaugther came to talk to the students about ARCO's involvement in
Burma.  Despite claiming to be concerned about the human rights situation
in Burma, Mr. Slaughter refused to comply with the students primary demand:
That Mr. Slaughter write a letter expressing his opposition to ARCO's
continued involvement in Burma.

When Mr. Slaughter refused to comply with the demand, six Occidental
College students began a hunger strike.     They are currently sitting
outside Mr. Slaugther's office.  Whenever Mr. Slaughter leaves his office,
he will be forced to deal with the fact that his failure to act, to do what
is right is not only helping to perpetuate military rule in Burma, but is
resulting in the suffering of his own students.
