Xinhua
15-DEC-97
KUALA LUMPUR (Dec. 15) XINHUA -
Chinese President Jiang Zemin and
Chairman of the Myanmar State Peace
and Development Council Than Shwe
today expressed satisfaction with the
development of the relations between their
two countries.
During a meeting here with Than Shwe,
Jiang said that in recent years, the ties
between China and Myanmar have
maintained the momentum of all-around
development and the Chinese government
has always attached importance to the
promotion of friendly relations with
Myanmar.
Jiang pledged that his country would
make continuous efforts to promote its
neighborly friendship with Myanmar
oriented toward the 21st century.
He said the economic and trade
cooperation between the two countries
has also made remarkable progress in
recent years and has great potential for
further development.
He expressed the belief that such
cooperation will be pushed to a new high
through the joint efforts of the two
governments and the business circles of
the two countries.
Jiang congratulated Myanmar on its
joining the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN), saying the development
and the strengthening of ASEAN is
conducive to lasting peace and long-term
development in the Asia-Pacific region.
Than Shwe said there exist traditional
friendly relations between the two
countries, nurtured by their elder leaders.
"We are responsible for and committed to
maintaining, consolidating and promoting
the friendship between Myanmar and
China. We would never forget the support
and assistance provided to us by the
Chinese government at the time when
Myanmar faced difficulties," he said.
Than Shwe briefed Jiang on the efforts
and achievements Myanmar has made in
its economic development in recent years.
Congratulating Myanmar on the
improvement and development of its
economy, Jiang said, "The world is a
diverse one and each country has the right
to choose its social system and road of
development in the light of its own
conditions." "The domestic problems
faced by any country should be dealt with
by its own people and the problems faced
by the world should be settled by the
countries concerned through friendly
consultations."
The two leaders also spoke highly of the
informal summit of East Asian nations
held here today and shared the view that
the exchange of views informally by the
leaders is conducive to mutual
understanding between the countries
concerned and to seeking common
ground while reserving differences.
Jiang believed that the difficulties faced by
Southeast Asian countries would be
overcome gradually.
"I am confident of the future of Asia's
economic development," Jiang said.
