YANGON (Dec. 19) XINHUA - Japan will
give 90,000 U.S. dollars to Myanmar
welfare association in grant aid to help
reduce maternal and infant mortality in
Myanmar, according to a press release by
               the Japanese Embassy here Friday.

A contract was signed here Friday
               between Japanese ambassador to
               Myanmar Yoichi Yamaguchi and professor
Kyu Kyu Swe, president of the Myanmar
               Maternal and Child Welfare Association.

According to the contract, the grant aid
will be provided for the project "Diagnostic
               Ultrasound Services to Reduce Maternal
               and Infant Mortality and Morbidity".

In November, Japan agreed to give nearly
200,000 U.S. dollars to local Myanmar
organizations in grant aid to help rural
               development projects and agricultural
education, according to an earlier press
               release.

Japan also extended to Myanmar in June
about 16.5 million U.S. dollars for debt
               relief.
