YANGON (Jan. 23) XINHUA -
Myanmar Minister for Health Ket Sein
has urged dental surgeons in the
country to strive to promote the level
of oral hygiene for the people.
Speaking at the opening session of
the Myanmar Dental Surgeons
Association here Thursday, Sein
called for collective efforts in
implementing the primary oral health
care project which covers 27
townships in the country, the official
New Light of Myanmar newspaper
reported Friday.
The project, initiated in 1991, is one
of those being implemented with the
help of non-governmental
organizations (NGO).
Myanmar has brought about nearly
50 dental surgeons with master
degrees since 1993, the minister
said, adding that plans are underway
to open another institute of dental
medicine in Mandalay, the second
largest city of the country, in addition
to the one in the capital Yangon.
Myanmar is implementing a five-year
national health plan from 1996 to
2001 which includes six broad
programs and 50 detailed projects for
providing health care services and
disease control in the country.
A total of 18 papers were to be read
at the five-day conference which is
being attended by officials of health
departments, international agencies
and local NGOs.
According to official statistics, there
were nearly 900 dental surgeons in
Myanmar in the 1996-97 fiscal year.
