Situation in sixth brigade area


Members of KNU, NLD-LA, ABSDF and PDF have been working to organize local
people and provide security for communities in the area of Region-3 of
Duplaya district in Sixth Brigade area since December 1997.

They formed a political and military committee of that area in December
1997. From 7-12-97 to 2-1-98, they have held mass meetings at big villages
such as Ka-leik-toke, Ywar-ga-lay, Late-poke, War-daw, Jaung-zone, Win-poke.

At the meetings, they --

- explained about the general situation of the country and also the
political and military situation of the SPDC and the KNU;

- explained about their positions on political and military issues and also
the current situation of the united fronts and the affiliated opposition forces;

- read and explained the position paper of the KNU on their negotiations
with SPDC;

- read and explained the agreement of the ethnic seminar held at Mae-tha-raw-hta; 

- explained about the national convention held by SLORC/SPDC;

- explained about the ways the people and the opposition groups can cooperate;

- made discussions with the people. 

In addition, in order to provide general knowledge and accurate news to the
local people, a bulletin named Upstream was regularly published and distributed.

In this period, some SPDC and DKBA troops laid down their arms and joined
the opposition as they became convinced of their wrong-doings.

On 2-1-1998, Lieutenant Soe Win of DKBA, accompanied by private Bwai Htoo,
private Kyaw Tha Coke, private Tin Nyunt, private Ah Zon, altogether five
people, laid down their arms and joined No.2 column. They brought with them
one carbine and 70 bullets, one 40mm and 10 grenades, two AK-47 automatic
rifle and 180 bullets, one M-16 rifle and 80 bullets.

On  4-1-1998, one private from No. 2 military column of SPDC Light Infantry
Battalion (547) led by Major Thu Yein Zaw laid down arms to No. 2 column of
Sixth brigade of KNU.  The private's name is Kyaw Zwar Win (Serial Number
995981). He brought with him a G-3 automatic rifle and 225 bullets.

On 13-1-1998, Corporal Hla Thaung (Serial No: 662393) from the admin.
company of infantry battalion (284) also joined no. 2 column of 6th brigade.

All those who joined the opposition forces were welcomed warmly and
properly taken care of by the opposition forces.
