The Statement of the National League for Democracy-Liberated Area (Youth)
On the 10th Anniversary of the Human Rights Day in Burma

March 13,1998

1. Today marks the 10th Anniversary of Human Rights Days in Burma, as well
as Ko Phone Maw, together with (5) other students at Rangoon Institute of
Technology (RIT), were killed by riot police (Loin Htein) on 13th March
1988, on struggling against tyranny for freedom and dignity.

2. The Univresal Declaration of Human Rights's Preamble stated that;
"Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal inalienable
rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom,
justice and peace in the world", "Whereas disregard and contempt for human
rights have resulted in barbarous acts, which have outraged the conscience
of mankind" and "Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to
have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and
oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule and Law".
But, in Burma, the students deprive of liberty, began to fight to get back
their inherent rights. In this way, all the pro-democrats marked this 13th
March, as the Human Rights Day in Burma, in commemoration for the struggle
to restore human rights.

3. The large number of political prisoners held in Burma today have been
charged with false or so-called criminal offences just because of their
efforts to uphold Articles 19, 20 and 21 of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. Further they have been subjected to the kind of treatments
which runs contrary to Articles 5 to 12.

4. Nowadays, the military regime has been attacking all ethnic
nationalities including Karen, Shan, Karenni, Chin and Araken
nationalities by armed. Thousands of refugees have been fleeing into the
neighboring counties because of military offensive by the Burmese army.
So, the NLD-LA (Youth) views that such kind of conflict and confrontation
can only bring more sufferings of entire people and all ethnic
nationalities who have already been troubled much political and economic
hardships, and we believe that only political means can achieve a genuine
internal peace.

5. Hence, the NLD-LA (Youth) is firmly determined to join hands with all
the ethnic nationalities and pro-democracy organizations to immediately
establish a genuine democratic government in Burma and to bring about
social and political changes, which will guarantee a peaceful, stable and
progressive society where human rights, as outlined in the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights are protected.

May a Genuine Democratic Union Emerge Soon!
