New body to investigate logs haul
Temsak Traisophon

The Interior Ministry has set up a committee to take over an
investigation into the seizure of more than 13,000 teak logs found at a
Tak sawmill.

The panel, chaired by inspector-general Songvuth Ngarm-meesri, is
authorised to take legal action if its findings provide grounds to do
so.

Mr Songvuth said the committee has been assigned to find out whether the
seized logs were imported from Burma or hauled out of Salween National
Park.

Its members, including specialists, will go to Tak tomorrow and inspect
every single log to prove its origin, he said.

Local investigators will be called to brief the committee on the
progress of the case, he said.

About 13,000 logs were confiscated from Saha Vanakij Sawmill Co in Ban
Tak district.

Mr Songvuth said the investigation would take about five months to
complete and more members would be appointed to facilitate the work.

The committee comprises six local administration officials and 22 police
officers including Pol Maj-Gen Mongkol Kamolbutr, assistant commissioner
of the Central Investigation Bureau, Pol Col Luerit Puiphanwong, deputy
commander of the Tak Police Bureau and Pol Col Bonnjing Thongmongkol,
deputy chief of the Forestry Police Bureau.
