Archaeology Museum near Gadotpalin Pagoda in the ancient city of Bagan, Nyaung
U Township, Nyaung U District, Mandalay Division, was inaugurated on 17 April.
The first archaeology museum was built near the northern stairway of Ananda
Temple in Bagan in 1904 and it was a small building, 60 feet by 30 feet, which
housed ancient stone inscriptions, Buddha images and other cultural objects
collected from Bagan area. In 1976, the site to the south of Gadotpalin Pagoda
was designated for Archaeology Museum compound where an octangular-shaped
museum building was constructed and three big sheds were also built near it to
display stone inscriptions and stone statues. A new museum ornamented with
Myanma architectural designs was built and the foundation was laid in March
1995 to build the new museum designed by the architects of Public Works. The
new museum has the main hall, Bagan literature hall, social and military
paintings hall, architecture hall, fine arts hall, stupa and temple paintings
hall and Buddhist art hall which display ancient cultural objects and
exhibits. The museum, 380 feet by 360 feet on 10.97 acres, was completed

(6) A Response to the Accusation Made by Amnesty International
Regretfully, Amnesty International has become a platform for the Myanmar
dissident groups and left over insurgents to churn out fabrications and
exaggerations to discredit the Myanmar Government. Some of the allegations may
be partially true but definitely not in the way Amnesty International is
portraying. Especially the killings and torturing of ethnic races are totally
nonsense. They are deliberately trying to tarnish the image of the government
which has put its heart and soul in the process of establishing national unity
and being able to do so for the first time in her modern history.
To cite one example, the government of Myanmar has been accused of killing
and torturing Kayin people especially Kayin insurgents professing
Christianity. If the allegations were true the question is why would the KNU
Central Executive Member Pado Aung San and (240) Kayin Christians traded arms
for peace with the government on 7th April. On April 12th morning
(9) members of (KNU) battalion No.(11) also traded arms for peace at East Ban-
Lau in Kayin State to the local authorities.
