New Year Greetings from the Nationa

New Year Greetings from the National League for Democracy

The sixth day of the waning moon of Tagu, 1360 Buddhist era --
April 17, 1998 -- marks the end of the old year and the beginning of the New Year,
an auspicious occasion in the Burmese tradition. The National League
for Democracy takes the opportunity to wish its members and all the
other citizens of the Union of Burma good health, prosperity, and all the
good fortunes of the New Year.

The NLD believes that upon entering the New Year, it is essential to
examine the right and the wrong of one's own action in the past year. In
doing so, the National League for Democracy made the following observation:

a. The NLD has publicly declared that the wish of the people is paramount.
It has strictly adhered to and acted in accordance with the Manifesto it
had issued at the time of the election, as well as in accordance with the
points stipulated in Paragraph 7, Chapter II (Objectives) of the (Draft)
Principles and the (Provisional) Constitution released at the time of the
inception of the NLD.

The National League for Democracy makes it known that it will not change
its position on these principles.

In addition, it has also become necessary to objectively observe the
current situation in the country. Today, the people are facing political,
economic and social hardships. The NLD therefore pledges, as its New Year
resolution, that it will actively do everything physically and
intellectually possible to resolve all the problems that the people are
facing today.
