News on Burma from DVB,Norway

Excerpt from letter written by Erik Solheim, Foreign Relation Committee,
Norwegian Parliment

Printed in Dagbladet Newspaper
April 27th 1998

The radio station "Democratic Voice of Burma" is an important tool for the
opposition. The radio station is run by native Burmese living in Norway
and transmits through kvitsøy. We met many people, both ordinary and
members of the opposition, who told us that they listened to the station.
When asked what they were missing, they answered unanimously: "More time!
Longer broadcasting!". This Radio station is, together with BBC, the only
possibility of getting true information. Recently, a villager in the
Irrawaddy delta was sentenced to two years imprisonment for turning up the
volume of his radio so that his neighbors could hear the voice from Norway.
