              Cabinet gives
              education priority
              in B800bn budget

              Investment figure accounts for 26.4% 

              The cabinet yesterday passed the proposed 800-billion-baht
              budget for 1999, with the education sector being handed the
              lion's share of 207.4 billion baht.

              The budget comprises 211,134.6 million baht in investment
              expenditure, 583,515.2 million baht in permanent expenditure
              and 5,350.2 million baht in loan repayments.

              The investment expenditure accounts for 26.4 percent of the
              total budget and represents a 17.7-percent drop compared to
              this year's 255,432.8 million baht.

              Permanent expenditure, meanwhile, represents an increase of
              13.9 percent against this year's 512,331.1 million baht.

              A breakdown of the budget is as follows:

              Agriculture, 58,922.7 million baht; industry and mining, 3,230.2
              million baht; communications and transport, 61,423.4 million
              baht; commerce and tourism, 6,865 million baht; science,
              technology, energy and environment, 13,131.6 million baht;
              education, 207,476.4 million baht; public health, 61,341.7
              million baht; social services, 77,374.0 million baht; national
              security, 86,684.6 million baht; internal security, 44,659.4 million
              baht; general administration, 102,485.2 million baht; debt
              repayment, 76,405.8 million baht.
