NEWS - Thai Trade with Neighbors on

NOTE: Thai trade with Myanmar/Burma will only improve when the real
government is in place and doing buisiness. The SPDC is not a
government. The military should never be concerned with politics and
trade!!

Thai Trade with Neighbors on Rise

           18-MAY-98

           BANGKOK (May 18) XINHUA -
           Thailand's trade with its four
neighbors in the first four months this
year increased by 138 percent from
that of the same period last year to
           62.89 billion baht (1.66 billion U.S.
           dollars), the Bangkok Post Monday
           quoted Deputy Prime Minister
           Supachai Panitchpakdi as saying.

           According to Supachai, also
Commerce Minister, the value of Thai
           exports to Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia
and Myanmar from January to April
totaled 50.23 billion baht (1.32 billion
dollars), up by 146.6 percent, leaving
a trade surplus of 37.57 billion baht
           (989 million dollars), a 161.5 percent
           increase.

           Trade with Malaysia increased by
217 percent, while that with Laos and
Cambodia jumped by 29 percent and
           0.4 percent respectively.

           However, border trade with Myanmar
dropped by 23 percent due to security
           problems.

           Supachai said Thailand would meet
           Myanmar officials in September to
           solve the problems including
           checkpoints, customs and
           smuggling.

Supachai said a committee in charge
of border trade will also streamline
           the complicated procedures involving
           eight departments at present.

           The committee recommended that
           the Customs Department should take
charge of all border trade and provide
           one-stop service for importers and
           exporters.
