Myanmar Holds Medical Conference

          YANGON (June 2) XINHUA - A medical
          conference is being held here to promote
          Myanmar's national health care programs
          and bring out qualified local health experts
          in accordance with the country's health
          development projects and national health
          objectives. 

          The three-day conference, which began
          Monday, is organized for conducting
          post-graduate medical courses, official
          newspaper The New Light of Myanmar
          reported Tuesday. 

          The conference, the sixth since 1964,
          mainly discussed reassessment on
          selecting candidates for medical
          post-graduate courses and development
          of curriculums and production and use of
          post-graduates. 

          Myanmar leader Lieutenant-General Khin
          Nyunt, who is first secretary of the State
          Peace and Development Council,
          stressed at the conference the need to
          promote private health care sector which
          is employing 50 percent of the nation's
          health manpower. 

          Four diploma courses have opened for
          private doctors beginning in the 1997-98
          fiscal year and institutes of higher learning
          have so far brought out 862
          post-graduates and 1,537 graduates, he
          said. 

          Myanmar worked out a five-year National
          Health Plan from 1996 to 2001, which
          includes a health system development
          project relating to manpower
          development. 

          Attending the conference are officials of
          Myanmar health departments, experts,
          representatives of various local medical
          associations and the World Health
          Organization.
