India Says China Installing Equipment in Myanmar

NEW DELHI, June 4 (Reuters) - Indian
Defence Minister George Fernandes said
on Thursday that China had been helping
Myanmar install surveillance and
communications equipment in some of its
islands in the Bay of Bengal.
Fernandes, in reply to a question, told the
lower house of parliament that Chinese
personnel have been visiting Myanmar to
install the system.
``They (Myanmar authorities) have further
informed that the monitoring facilities are
being utilised for surveillance of their
'Exclusive Economic Zone','' he added.
Last month Fernandes said China had
built a sophisticated electronic
surveillance base in Myanmar's Coco
Islands, from where Beijing could monitor
activities along India's eastern coast.
Myanmar denied the allegations and
China's foreign ministry expressed
``utmost grief and resentment'' over
Fernandes' comments.
