One million amphetamine tablets seized in Burma

Rangoon, June 9: The police have arrested three people and seized more
then one million amphetamine tablets that were apparently being smuggled
to Thailand, official newspapers reported on Tuesday. Amphetamine
production has soared in recent years in the notorious golden triangle
region where the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand converge. The area
has long been one of the world's principal sources of opium and its
derivative, heroin.
The police reportedly stop a car carrying the tablets in secret
compartments at a checkpoint near the northeastern town of Kengtung. The
car was heading for Tachilek, on Thai border. The three men in the car
were being detained pending trial, the newspapers said. Drug trafficking
carries the death penalty. (AP)
