NATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE UNION OF BURMA

NCUB Statement on Decision of the NLD Meeting
									June 15, 1998

On May 27, 1998, at the general meeting of the National League for
Democracy (NLD), a 13-point decision of great consequence was made and
announced. This has a vital hearing on the political and economic situation
of Burma.

1. The NLD is a political party that had won a landslide victory, receiving
an overwhelming vote of the people, in the election held on May 27, 1990.
Consequently, the NCUB believes that the stand and activities of the NLD
are legitimate and in consonant with the will and interest of the voters.
The NCUB is also convinced that it is inevitable for the NLD to take the
stand and act, as it has done.

2. After the result of the election was known and confirmed, convening of
the parliament, formation of a new government, the transfer of power,
commencement of the new governmental and parliamentary work should have
taken place within a period of 60 days. However, as the State Peace and
Development Council (SPDC-formerly SLORC) has prohibited and suppressed the
emergence of these events by various means, the political and economic
conditions of the country have increasingly deteriorated and the country is
now in a very dangerous situation. Therefore, the demand by the NLD to have
the permission for convening the parliament within 3 months, is a rational
and perfectly correct demand. The NCUB is strongly convinced that if the
permission is not given, the NLD has the right to perform the necessary and
appropriate activities in conformity with the will of the people.

3. The 13-point decision of the NLD reflects the will of the people, and
concerns matters that must be urgently performed, without delay.
Accordingly, we, the NCUB earnestly urge the NLD to stand firmly and
persevere in accordance with its 13-point decision, and call upon the
political parties in towns and cities, the Buddhist monks, students and the
people to give all-round support to the endeavor of the NLD led by Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi, and demand the SPDC (formerly SLORC) to desist from all its
negative activities and comply with the 13-point demand of the NLD,
immediately.
