MYANMAR'S Transportation Improves in 1997-98

            YANGON (June 19) XINHUA - Myanmar's transport sector
increased 6.6
            percent in value in 1997-98 fiscal year ending March over
the previous year,
            according to the latest official statistics. 

            Measures were taken in the year for the development of the
sector by joint
            operation with local and foreign companies in the road, rail
and air
            transportation and construction of container terminal
wharves, said a report
            on the country's financial, economic and social conditions. 

            During the year, in addition to the increase of various
means of transport,
            1,553 kilometers of highways were also built, extending to
29,844 km, and
            307 km of railroads were expanded, adding up to 5,750 km. 

            The capacity of road, rail and water transport also
increased over the
            previous year, it said. 

            In air transport, the state-run Myanmar Airways and other
joint venture
            airlines were operating the internal flights, transporting a
total of 900,000
            passengers on the domestic routes in the year, while 250,000
international
            passengers were transported by the Myanmar Airways
International and 11
            foreign airlines, the report said. 

            The country's transport sector shared 4.3 percent of its
gross domestic
            product in 1997-98 which grew by 4.6 percent.
