Xinhua
29-JUN-98
YANGON (June 30) XINHUA - Myanmar is planning
to work out an information technology program in an
effort to promote the development and
advancement of computer technology in the
country.
The plan was discussed at the first symposium on
the information technology initiative held here
Monday, the official newspaper The New Light of
Myanmar reported Tuesday.
The symposium took place after two Myanmar
associations of computer technicians and
entrepreneurs were formed last month.
Plans are also under way to conduct master and
doctorate courses with the assistance of a foreign
university following the opening of institutes of
computer science and technology in two major
cities of Yangon and Mandalay with graduate and
post-graduate courses conducted, said First
Secretary of the Myanmar State Peace and
Development Council Lieutenant-General Khin
Nyunt at the symposium.
He stressed the need for effective application of
advanced technology for rapid national progress
and uplifting of society.
Myanmar started computerized teaching at
universities and institutes in 1993.
After the promulgation of its Computer Technology
Development Law in September 1996, the country
has striven for the progress of computer
technology, successfully launching the first
interactive CD last month on "Myanmar Another
Incarnation," which covers various aspects on the
country.
