Burmese pro-democracy supporters arrested

Exiled Burmese pro-democracy activists based in Bangkok say more than forty
supporters of the National League for Democracy in Burma have been arrested
by the military government.

The All Burma Students Democratic Front says the arrests are a response to a
call last week by the NLD for the Burmese parliament elected in 1990 to be
convened.

The NLD won a sweeping victory in that election but the results were never
implemented by the military authorities.

Meanwhile, the NLD chairman, U Aung Shwe, has written to the military
government to complain about the arrests and harassment of NLD members.
