Burmese groups warn of disaster

A coalition of Burmese pro-democracy and ethnic groups has called on the
military government to take urgent steps to avert what they describe as a
disaster facing the country.

The National Council of the Union of Burma, NCUBbased in Bangkok, said
unrest in Burma was increasing because of economic difficulties.

The NCUB said the military government should convene the parliament elected
in 1990 and hold talks with Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League
for Democracy.

On Saturday, the Burmese authorities said they had placed restrictions on
NLD members to avoid confrontation between the League and the government.
