YANGON (July 7) XINHUA - Crime rate in Myanmar declined in
the
first five months of 1998 from a year earlier, the official
newspaper The
New Light of Myanmar reported Tuesday.

Quoting Second Secretary of the Myanmar State Peace and
Development Council Lieutenant-General Tin Oo, the paper
said
however that although drug-related cases decreased, gambling
and
            prostitution cases slightly increased.

At a coordination meeting here Monday jointly organized by
Myanmar's Crime Reduction, Education and Information
Committee
(CREIC) and the Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory
Committee,
Tin Oo also said the number of traffic accidents and
accident-caused
injuries and deaths dropped in the January-May period
compared with
            the same period of 1997.

He called for effective enforcement of rules in Yangon to
reduce road
            accidents.

He said actions need to be taken against traffic rule
violations in the
            capital.

According to him, there are between 800 and 1,000 motor
vehicles
involved in traffic rule violations every day in the
capital, which has
about 200,000 motor vehicles or 75 percent of the total
number in the
            whole country.

The CREIC was formed in October 1996 for effective
prevention of
crimes and for bringing down criminal offenses.
