Ministry: No yen credit to Myanmar

A senior Foreign Ministry official said Thursday the government has no
plans to provide further yen credit to Myanmar, indicating a continuation
of its previous stance of freezing financial aid to the Southeast Asian
country until it becomes more democratic.

The Japanese government froze financial assistance to Myanmar after a
military coup in 1988. Humanitarian aid was restarted in 1995 and yen
credit provided in March for the first time since 1988 for safety measures
at the nation's international airport.

However, this move did not indicate a change in the basic stance of the
government toward Myanmar, the ministry official said.
