Myanmar pro-democracy activists stage ToKyo sit-in July 27 1998

TOKYO (AP)-Several pro-democracy activists from Myanmar began a sit-in =
Monday in front of their country's embassy in Tokyo protesting a =
military blockade of Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.Suu Kyi was stopped =
friday morning 51 kilometers (32 miles), west of Yangon, Myanmar =
capital, while driving to the western city of Bassein to meet members of =
her political party.=20

It was the third time that Myanmar's military government has tried to =
block her from traveling to townships outside Yangon in recent weeks. As =
of Sunday there had been no resolution to the standoff and Suu Kyi =
prepared to spend a third night in her car.

"We want the world to know that Burmese people are still under the =
oppression of the military regime", said Kyaw Lun Tin, secretary of =
National League for Democracy (Liberated Area) Japan Branch, in a =
statement.

Myanmar is also known as Burma.

A spokesman at Tokyo's Shinagawa police station said an unspecified =
number of police were posted around the Myanmar Embassy, but that no =
trouble was reported with the protest.

An official at Embassy, speaking on condition of annoymity, said several =
activists were seen conducting a sit-in near the building's gate Monday =
morning.

The sit-in was scheduled to last one day, the release said.
