Protest on Friday 31st July in Sydn

Urgent Media Release
Attn: Chief of Staff,
Burmese students, community and supporters
Demonstrate at Howard's office
29th July 1998

Burmese students, community and Australian supporters will be gathering at
the Prime Minister's office at 70 Phillip Street, Sydney at 12:30, Friday,
31st of July. They will be demanding the immediate imposition of economic
sanctions against the Burmese dictatorship.
The protests are part of the increasing international campaign to oust the
dictatorship and support the leader of the National League for Democracy
(NLD), Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has spent seven days (as of Thursday) in her car
refusing to be turned back from a meeting with NLD colleagues. The state of
her health is also a serious concern. Tensions have increased considerably
as the NLD has set the 21st of August as the deadline for the convening of a
National Parliament. This is direct opposition to the ruling dictatorship
who rejected the overwhelming NLD victory in the 1990 elections.
Aynt Tin, President of the All Burma Students' Democratic Organisation
(ABSDO) said,
"While we recognize the efforts of Alexander Downer at the recent ASEAN
meeting to increase pressure on the junta we believe the government must do
more"
Maung Maung Than, the General Secretary of the ABSDO said,
"If the Australia government truly supports democracy in Burma they should
support the call of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and impose sanction on the
dictatorship. The implementation of such a policy is especially appropriate
as the 10th anniversary of the 8yh August uprising and massacre in 1988
approaches"
There will be a rally and several speakers including U Tin Htut (elected
member of Parliament in 1990, NLD) at the Prime Minister's office then a
march will proceed to State Parliament calling for selective purchasing laws
to be adopted by local councils and NSW Parliament.
This protest is jointly organized by All Burma Student Democratic
Organization ( Australia) , National League for Democracy - Liberated Area -
Aus, Australia Burma Council and U Tin Htut NLD MP.
