LONDON, July 30 (Reuters) - Britain's Foreign Office on Thursday summoned
Myanmar's ambassador to lodge a protest at the treatment of opposition
leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

``I want to make clear that the Burmese regime's interference in Aung San
Suu Kyi's freedom of movement and association is unacceptable,'' Foreign
Secretary Robin Cook said in a statement.

``This fundamental infringement of her basic human rights can only do harm
to Burma. It is high time the regime recognised the need to open an
immediate dialogue with the NLD,'' Cook said, referring to Suu Kyi's
National League for Democracy party.

Suu Kyi was forcibly removed earlier on Thursday from a car where she had
held a six-day sit-in protest after she was barred from travelling to meet
party supporters.

The Nobel Prize winner was released from six years of house arrest in 1995,
but Myanmar's military government has continued to restrict her movement.

Her protest this week has brought worldwide condemnation, and embarrassment
to Myanmar's government. U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright accused
the junta of violating Suu Kyi's human rights.
