Dear Sir,

The Italian Trade Union Confederations CGIL CISDL UIL with more than 11
million members are extremely preoccupied for the fact that after one year
U Khin Kyaw, leader of the sea workers Union and U Myo Aung Thant, trade
union leader of petrochemical Union, both affiliated to the BTUC are still
in jail.

Brother U Myo has been condemned to 10 years of prison and to life jail for
high treason, while brother U Khin Kyaw is detained without trial, Last
year the ICFTU has presented the case to the Special Reporter on torture of
the UN Human Right Commission, after having received proofs that the two
trade unionist have been tortured.

CGIL CISL UlL are extremely preoccupied as well for the continuous threats
by government representatives to the representative of the National League
for Democracy Daw Aung San Suu Kyi against other NLD opposition party
representatives.

We strongly support the request of the National League for Democracy to
convene of August the 21st the democratic Parliament elected on 1990.

The Italian Trade union Confederations ask for the liberation without
condition of the above mentioned leaders and their family members as well
as the liberation of the other trade union and democratic leaders in jail
and the immediate interruption of the intimidation towards other activists
for democracy.
