JOINT ACTION COMMITTEE FOR DEMOCRATIC BURMA
Sydney - Australia

Media Release

Date: 7.8.98.

On 8.8.98. a demonstration rally organized by the Joint Action Committee
for Democratic Burma in commemoration of 10th anniversary of popular
people's uprising, will be held in front of the Burmese Embassy at No. 22,
Arakana Street, Yaralumla , Canberra. It is estimated that about 400
patriotic Burmese including people from different Burmese organizations,
individuals and supporting Australian citizens. Senators,
Parliamentarians, representatives from Labor Unions, National Union of
Students, Democratic Socialist Party and Resistance Left Alliance,
Indonesian Students' representative and Elected Members of parliament in
1990 election in Burma will make their speeches on that occasion.

Saw A. Ganemy Kunoo, General Secretary of Australia Karen Organization,
said to the JACDB regarding 8.8.98., "To-day marks the Tenth anniversary of
the historic massacre of the thousand of our people, who were crying and
dying for the love of Democracy and freedom in Burma. The Australia Karen
Organization is in unison with you and stand together in the struggle for
righteousness, that would bring eternal freedom and peace in Burma."

Kyaw Soe Moe, Secretary of National League for Democracy (LA) Australia,
said, "We have seen lately that the military steps up their pressure and
repression on NLD and Daw Augn San Suu Kyi after it has made the call for
convening of the parliament. Democratic governments such as USA, Australia,
UK, EU etc. are strongly denouncing the callous acts of the military regime
in Burma on the opposition. Annihilation can only lead to devastation of
both sides and dialogue is the only means of reaching a peaceful solution
of the national problems. We strongly warn the military thugs in Burma to
enter into dialogue with the National League for Democracy led by Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi before it is too late and if not, they are the only ones to be
responsible for the resulting consequences.

Soe Lwin from All Burma Students' league said, "The current situation in
Burma has become volatile and extremely dangerous. The recent acts of SPDC
have been irresponsible and have had a detrimental effect on the democratic
process. We strongly support the call, made by Secretary of State, United
States of America for UN Intervention in Burma. We would like to urge the
international community including Australian government to support the
NLD's call for convening of the parliament and to make official contact
with the legitimately elected political party to help pave the way for
dialogue between the NLD and the military regime in Burma."

Transports to Canberra are arranged to leave Sydney from Strathfield
Station (Everton Road) and A.Y.B.L. Center (Lidcombe) and it has been made
known to all to arrive at those Bus Stops not later than 7.00 a.m. on
