in Burma.

and monks who=20
were shot and killed in the brutal military crackdown on this day. We =

democracy, freedom and human rights.

"Background"

In 1988, on the 8th day of August, known as the Four Eights (8-8-88) the =
largest show of=20
people power ever recorded in Burma=92s political history took place. =
Thousands of=20
activists including young students and monks were gunned down, jailed, =
or exiled. Daw=20
Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the movement to restore democracy and =
civilian rule was=20
placed under house arrest. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi=92s National League for =
Democracy=20
party (NLD) won an overwhelming majority in the elections held in May =
1990, but the=20
results were ignored by the military regime, which remains in power to =
this day.

Ten years later thousands of political prisoners suffer at the hands of =
the brutal generals.=20
Some are dying under hellish prison conditions while others are =
undergoing severe=20
torture. Many members of NLD party are detained in Burma=92s prisons =
while Daw Aung=20
San Suu Kyi=92s peaceful efforts to visit other party members is being =
blocked by the State=20
Peace and Development Council (SLORC/SPDC).
