Burma military warns opposition against demos

The military government in Burma has warned that it will stop any
opposition demonstrations in the week leading up to the anniversary on
Saturday of the 1988 pro-democracy uprising.

One state-run newspaper said any external or internal threat to Burma would
be annihilated.

The state run media has also accused the opposition leader, Aung San Suu
Kyi, of working with foreign powers to destabilise the country in order to
commemorate the uprising.

Security has been tightened around the capital Rangoon, with heavily armed
troops posted at major intersections in the city.

Aung San Suu Kyi is currently recovering from dehydration and fever
following a six day stand-off with the army in which she was locked her
car.
