Statement by JACDB(Sydney-Australia

STATEMENT BY JOINT ACTION COMMITTEE FOR DEMOCRATIC BURMA
(Sydney - Australia)
ON 8.8.98.

To-day marks the tenth anniversary of historic massacre of thousands of
peaceful demonstrators including innocent people, students, monks, and even
children and women, committed by the brutal military regime in Burma. The
reason for cracking down on them was to restore stability and peace of the
nation but the only crime the people committed was asking for freedom,
democracy and human rights.

8.8.88. people's uprising stood as the largest people's forum in the modern
history of Burma where they dared to express their earnest desires against
the totalitarian military junta. Even though the general election was
allowed to be held in 1990, the ruling generals failed to honor their
promise to recognize the election results by which the National League for
Democracy has gained 82% of parliamentary seats.

Now the National League for Democracy led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is
calling for convening of the parliament according to 1990 general election
results. We, all the democratic forces, strongly support the stand and
call of the National League for Democracy.

We appeal to the Australian government to offer full political support to
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi especially on the call for economic sanction on Burma.
On this regrettable and remorseful day, we solemnly condemn the military
junta for their ferocious atrocities and crimes and strongly call on them

1. to allow convening the parliament before the dead line set by the
National League for Democracy.
2. to enter into dialogue with the National League for Democracy led by Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi with a view leading to tripartite dialogue.
3. to release all political prisoners including U Win Tin and Min Ko Naing
immediately and unconditionally.
4. to stop all atrocious acts and abuses of human rights.
5. to reopen all universities and colleges and recognize establishment of
Students' Union.
