MLOB Statement on 10th Anniversary

MUSLIM LIBERATION ORGANIZATION OF BURMA (MLOB)
MLOB Statement on 10th Anniversary of 8.8.88.

 1. August 8, 1998 marks the 10th anniversary of the nation-wide
pro-democracy uprisings in Burma led by the students against the one party
socialist dictatorship in 1988. During the historic demonstrations, several
thousands of peoples, including primary students, Buddhist monks and all
racial minorities, were massacred by the military dictatorship.

 2. Just after the massacre, the SLORC, now known as
SPDC, inherited power from socialist dictatorship
and started to harass the entire people and especially
persecuting the minorities. Tens of thousands of peoples fled the
brutalities and bacame refugees in neighbouring countries such as Thailand,
Bangladech, India and other democratic countries in the world. And several
hundreds of innocent people including NLD members have been imprisoned and
some were tortured to death.

 3. The massacre by the military dictatorship in 1988 angered the Burmese
people as well as the international communities. The SLORC, to divert the
attention, held a general election in 1990. However, the ruling military
dictatorship refused to honour its promise to relinquish the power when the
National League for Democracy(NLD) led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi
won landslide victory.

 4. Though the inhumane massacre has reached its 10th
anniversary, there has been no development in the fields of human rights
and democracy in Burma.

 5. The MLOB fully supports the lawful demands of the NLD to convene the
parliament by August 21, 1998 with the representatives elected by the
people in 1990 general election.

 6. The MLOB condemns the SLORC/SPDC which has been obstructing the free
movements of Daw Aung san Suu Kyi and her NLD members by means of various
tactics.

 7. we call upon the military authorities to unconditionaslly release all
political prisoners and resolve all long-standing political problems of
Burma by peaceful political means.
 8. In the meantime, we would like to appeal to the international community
to support Burma's pro-democracy movements and pressurize the military
junta to resolve Burma's political problems by political means.

 Let us stand united against
 all military dictatorships.
