Aung San Suu Kyi recovering from stand-off but "not 100 percent"

BANGKOK, Aug 8 (AFP) - Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was
recovering from a six-day roadside stand-off with authorities but her
health was still "not 100 percent," a US embassy spokesman said Saturday.

"She was not 100 percent," the spokesman said, after US charge d'affaires
Kent Wiedemann met with the Nobel peace laureate Friday.

Aung San Suu Kyi's health was a topic of their discussion at her Yangon
home, but other details of their talks were not available.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) leader also Friday made what was
believed to be her first trip outside her home since the stand-off ended on
July 29. She visited NLD co-vice chairman Tin Oo, party sources said.

The stand-off began when Aung San Suu Kyi attempted to leave Yangon to
visit supporters outside the capital for the third time in three weeks amid
escalating tensions between the opposition and Myanmar's junta.

As on the previous two occasions, she was blocked near the city by
officials. But in those incidents authorities brought supporters to speak
with her where she was stopped.

The third time, the junta said she refused to say who she wanted to see and
spent the next six days in her car on a rural roadside before being
forcibly driven back to Yangon on August 29.

Supporters said she was weak and suffering dehydration.

US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright last month warned the junta that
Washington held it completely responsible for Aung San Suu Kyi's welfare.

The junta responded by saying it had always been responsible for her
welfare, as it was for all Myanmar people.
