News Release from the Myanmar Embassy in U.K.

Myanmar People Have Chosen to Live in Peace
As 8th August 1998 drew closer International Media and the so-called
activists began beating war drums predicting that on that day the people of
Myanmar would pour down the streets and violent clashes between the government
and the people would take place.
On the same day, BBC World Service aired a televised interview with a
retired British Ambassador and the Head of Myanmar Section of the BBC
repeatedly.
The Burma Action Group said that they would recreate the 8th August 1988
scenario.
On the D-Day, chosen by those who would love to recreate anarchy in Myanmar,
the people themselves opted for the opposite there were neither uprisings nor
demonstrations on the streets in major cities. Instead, the people were
enjoying their right to live in peace.
When the peace loving people did not respond to the calls of the anarchists,
foreign interest groups sent foreigners to Myanmar to incite an unrest by
spreading calls to rally and distributing pamphlets by throwing out from the
taxis.
The eighteen foreigners who were involved in agitating the Myanmar people
might have discovered to their horror that the very people whom they had
expected to arouse had turned them into the hands of the police.
Even after their predictions were muted, foreign media and the
destructionists have not ended their charade, yet. Now they are predicting
again that the country is heading fast towards severe clashes between the
Government and the people on the 21st August, 1998.
Undoubtedly, the people of Myanmar will prove that these predictions are
wrong again.
The peace-loving people of Myanmar have accepted that without peace and
stability, the country would never achieve its aspirations to build a
peaceful, prosperous and a democratic nation. A nation cannot be built upon a
deranged and an unstable foundation. The people of Myanmar have acknowledged
that the economic progress which was achieved over a long period could not be
wiped out in a stroke.
The people are beginning to recognize who is sincere, who is the practical
builder of the nation, who is genuinely engaged in working for the nation as
against who are merely shouting loudly to express their love of the country
but in actual fact pushing the country down into the hellish pits.
