Burma bars UN emissary
The authorities in Burma have rejected a proposed visit by an emissary of
the United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan.
In a letter to Mr Annan, the head of the Burmese military government,
General Than Shwe, said this was not an appropriate time for a visit.
The UN had intended the emissary to mediate between the Burmese authorities
and the National League for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi. .
Correspondents say the latest move by the Burmese military government is
yet another sign that it's in no mood to compromise, amid increasing
international concern about the political impasse in Burma.
